At Grand Avenue UMC, we believe that
one of the ways faith expresses itself is through service, both within and
beyond the church. We are disciples
of Gods love and grace in the world! In response to God’s love, we act on our
belief in these ever-changing areas of mission.
WORLDWIDE
Through our full support of our mission
apportionment, we, along with 38,000 of our sister United Methodist
congregations, support hundreds of missionaries and thousands of mission
projects across the globe. Presently,
we are in a covenant relationship with Rev. Nkemba Ndjungu who is serving in
Sengal, West Africa. We also
support United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), which provides direct
immediate support for victims of disaster.
NATIONAL
Many individual programs, including
“flood bucket” items assembled for distribution to those displaced by
hurricanes or flooding throughout the state and country.
We are also involved in mission trips to help rebuild the lives and homes
of Hurricane Katrina victims.
STATEWIDE
We assist in “new church”
development, support the Northcott Neighborhood House (an outreach program for
children and adults) in Milwaukee’s inner city, and support United Methodist
Children’s Services. Children’s
Services is a Milwaukee-based safe housing and educational living facility for
single mothers and their children transitioning through tough times.
LOCAL
-
Food
Pantry – Donating food items, restocking shelves, assisting clients and helping
where needed. We also
gather gifts for Gift a Child, a Christmas gift donation for participants in
the food pantry program.
-
Helping
Hands – A local outreach program helping friends and members of the
congregation (budget counseling, short-term financial assistance, food,
essentials and spiritual counseling to get through tough times).
-
Ozaukee
County Interfaith – Grand Avenue provides an annual financial gift to
Ozaukee County Interfaith which assists them in their ecumenical efforts to
bring needed services to the senior population in the county.
-
Jail
Ministry – Pastor Dave leads month-long Bible studies at the Ozaukee County Jail
at various times throughout the year.
-
The
Christmas Giving Tree – Gifts, mittens, hats and scarves are collected for
the Northcott Neighborhood House and local families in need.
-
Love
Lights – In the spirit of sharing the celebration of God’s love and in
support of our national and global mission commitments, donations are made
for each bulb in memory or honor of loved ones, lighting our sanctuary
Christmas tree.
-
Blood
Drive – Grand Avenue is the host site for community-wide blood drives sponsored by
the Blood Center of Southeastern Wisconsin.
These drives are held every eight weeks. Grand Avenue assists in promoting the event to area churches
and community newspapers.
-
Various
Ongoing Programs - Coordinated programs are in place to raise funds for local
missions when purchases are made from area food stores and through the
collection of Campbell’s soup labels.
-
Under the guidance of our Pastor, we offer weddings, funerals and baptisms
to members and non-members alike.
-
Our facilities are available to the general community for appropriate
events at a nominal fee and are handicap accessible.
-
We fully support the Wisconsin Conference and the broader United Methodist
Church in its missions, both at home and abroad.
-
We have paid our apportioned share of the conference's expenses (Our
"Apportionments") in full every year without exception for more
than 20 years.
AREAS
OF SERVICE
There are also many other opportunities
of service within our congregation. Get involved in stuffing envelopes for church mailings,
collating newsletters and bulletins, ushering, greeting, small and large
maintenance projects, church committees, cleaning, yard care, and special
programs and projects. Call the
office, 262-284-9478, if any form of service appeals to you.
