Administrative
Council
– The Administrative Council is the governing and policy making
committee for Grand Avenue United Methodist Church.
They are responsible for local church strategic planning, policy making
and financial decisions. All
standing and working committees are represented on the council, as well as 3
persons representing the congregation (Lay Leader, Members at Large).
All church members are welcome to attend Council meetings. The
Committee on Lay Leadership
– This committee is responsible for identifying, developing, deploying,
evaluating and monitoring Christian spiritual leadership in the local
congregation. Members of the
committee shall engage and be attentive in developing and enhancing their own
spiritual life in light of the mission of the Church. The
Board of Trustees
– The Board of Trustees is composed of 9 members who serve the church for 3
years. They are responsible for the
care, upkeep, and improvement of the church, educational unit, grounds and the
parsonage. The Board makes many
small repairs, and hires contractors to make major repairs and improvements.
We always welcome help and welcome you to attend our meetings which are
scheduled as needed and posted in the bulletin (about 8 times per year). Lay
Member of Annual Conference
– The Lay Member of Annual Conference participates in all deliberations and
votes upon all measures at the annual conference session, except on matters
pertaining to ordination issues and questions pertaining to ordained ministers. Committee
on Finance
– This committee helps the members of our congregation to recognize the many
gifts God has given them and to respond with gratitude and appreciation for
those gifts. By reviewing the
income and expenses of our church on a monthly basis, the committee informs our
members of our current financial status. The
Committee on Finance also prepares an annual budget for our church after
receiving input from various committees. If
you have an interest in accounting, if you have a talent for fund raising, if
you are grateful for the gifts God has bestowed upon you, we encourage you to
share them with the congregation by joining us. Staff
Parish Relations Committee
– This committee assists the pastor to better serve the congregation.
The committee counsels with the pastor about the church and its programs
as well as setting priorities on the use of his time in accordance with the
mission and goals of the congregation. This
committee is elected by the congregation to serve as their representatives to
the pastor. They confer with the
district superintendent about the type of pastor needed, pastoral appointment,
and staff changes. Commission
on Education – The
Commission on Education is responsible for Sunday School classes for all age
groups in our congregation. The
mission of this committee is to serve the youth of our church by educating them
in the all-embracing love and teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ, setting in
each young person a firm foundation of Faith for the rest of their lives.
Throughout the year, we sponsor various activities including Rally Day
(to celebrate the first day of Sunday School), Palm Sunday parade, Confirmand
reception, and the Campership Lunch scholarship fundraiser.
We welcome you to attend our meetings on Sunday mornings during Sunday
School. Please contact the
Chairperson of Education or any committee member for more details. Commission
on Evangelism
– This commission enables the congregation of the church to identify
and reach out to those who haven’t embraced the Word, encourage and provide
opportunities for individuals to deepen their relationship with God, identify
and welcome visitors, incorporate new members, and help current members develop
relationships with each other. Some
of our programs are visiting, helping new members get involved, sending care
packages to our youth away from home, and caring for shut-ins or others with
special needs. Please call the Commission Chairperson for more information – we’d
enjoy having you as part of this committee. Committee on
Worship
– This committee acts as a liaison between the congregation and the pastor in
creating new worship ideas, new worship settings, and work to strengthen the
existing worship experience in any way possible.
The purpose of this committee is to enrich the worship experience for
every member, visitor and friend of the congregation.
Our programs include decorating the sanctuary seasonally, coordinating
special services, musicians and any other plans for special holiday observances.
Our commission meeting takes place seasonally, about four times a year,
or when the need arises. If you enjoy these kinds of activities, we welcome you
to this committee. Commission on Missions and Social Concerns – The Commission on Missions and Social Concerns works to educate all members of the mission opportunities locally, nationally, and internationally. The possibilities are almost endless, from youth work camps to Habitat for Humanity. This commission works with the Administrative Council to help bring our missions commitment of the Annual Conference to our members. We sponsor such events as the summer Rummage Sale and the “Love Lights” project. The Commission on Missions and Social Concerns usually meets once a month. Some meetings are formal, while others are informal “brain storming” sessions. We welcome new members to the committee at any time during the year. |
